3-cylinder Genesis 120™ engine
The RS Vector® Mountain is powered by the lightweight, compact Genesis 120 engine. Its long stroke and four-valve design produces a tremendous amount of torque for corner-to-corner acceleration on the trail. The broad torque curve is easy for clutch tuners to hit and allows riders to have instant power after backshifting. The three-cylinder engine debuted in 2005.
Direct-to-crankshaft clutching
Instead of using a gear reduction, the Genesis 120™ engine has the primary clutch directly attached to the crankshaft. This eliminates parts, complexity and weight, resulting in a better product for consumers. It also allows the engine to be mounted deeper in the chassis to deliver a lower center of gravity, further improving the sled’s cornering stability. The YVXC primary spins at 8500 RPM to transfer power from the engine, to the secondary and on to the track.
15x151x2-inch mountain track
The 151x2-inch long mountain track provides the RS Vector Mountain with excellent all-around traction for mountain riding. Its 2-inch-deep lugs grab the snow and keep it firmly in place to get the sled up and over the hill. The 151-inch length makes this a great multi-purpose mountain sled for any kind of riding.
Rear-exiting exhaust
The exhaust is routed out the back of the sled in order to optimize and maximize airflow through the engine. The tuned system is specifically engineered to produce the Genesis 120™’s broad powerband and also to help keep the sled in balance.
Lightweight hydraulic brake system
The lightweight hydraulic brake system delivers solid stopping power and resists fading. It runs strong all day long, thanks to its ventilated design. The brake system also features Yamaha’s exclusive mechanical parking brake for peace of mind while parked on an incline or on the trailer.
Lightweight forged pistons
The forged pistons used in the Genesis 120 engine are engineered for lightweight and still allow high compression rates of 11.3:1 on 87 Octane gas. The piston design came out with the Genesis 120™ engine on the 2005 Vector-class sleds.
Handling
Mountain skis
The saddleless plastic mountain ski is wider than a trail ski with a deep keel for excellent powder-handling characteristics. The unique arched fin design of the ski aids in powder handling and also deflects snow away from the sled and the driver.
Adjustable width second generation front suspension
The new configuration maintains spindle castor at 23 degrees throughout the travel stroke. This gives the sled consistent and predictable steering regardless of the suspension’s activity.
Aluminum HPG front shocks
The High Pressure Gas (HPG) shocks on the RS Vector Mountain’s second generation front suspension geometry deliver consistent performance with excellent fade resistance. They are rebuildable and rechargeable for years of quality service.
Magnesium valve, crankcase and oil pump covers
Yamaha incorporated liberal usage of ultra-lightweight magnesium material wherever possible to cut weight on engine componentry. The use of magnesium became widespread on all Genesis™-class engines in 2005.
Ultra-rigid Deltabox™ chassis
The Deltabox™ chassis is designed specifically to house the Genesis™ engine family. It supports the engine and utilizes it in forming the most rigid chassis on the market. The more rigid the chassis, the more consistent the sled will handle.
CF die cast construction
Yamaha’s Controlled Flow casting technique is used for many of the structural pieces on the chassis. The CF process draws the molten metal into the mold under a vacuum, eliminating the formation of air bubbles in the material. As a result, pieces can be made much thinner and still deliver the strength characteristics of a conventionally-cast, thicker piece. Yamaha started using the CF process on the 2003 RX-1.
Comfort
ProMountain™ 151 rear suspension
The lightweight ProMountain™ rear suspension is a more conventional torsion spring design. It was engineered to help the sled get up on plane in the fresh snow. It does this through weight transfer and shallow track approach angle. The dual-angle rails also give the RS Vector Moutain excellent trail manners, while maintaining its deep snow flotation. The ProMountain™ 151 delivers 12.4 inches of vertical travel.
Tall, lightweight mountain seat
The seat on the RS Vector Mountain is taller and lighter than on a trail sled to suit the mountain rider’s unique needs. The seat uses super-lightweight, yet firm foam for its height. In addition, the lightweight seat includes a new storage trunk in the rear, with expanded capacity and accessibility.
Wide, hooked handlebars with center grab strap
To match the tall and forward position, a new handlebar is standard fare on the RS Vector Mountain. The new design incorporates aftermarketstyle, keyed slot hooks on both sides to eliminate unwanted hook rotation. The hooks have the same grip material as the main bar section, for consistent control, regardless of hand position. Mountain riders will appreciate the stiff center grab strap when it’s time for sidehilling. The new mountain bar location is 2.25 inches above the standard Apex handlebars.
Traction strips on runningboard roll
The RS Vector Mountain features traction strips along the outer roll of the runningboards for added footing confidence.
Standard electric start
Yamaha’s electric starter system allows consumers to fire up their RS Vector Mountain with the turn of a key. There is no pulling on a nylon cord to get this high tech engine growling! Electric start has been a standard feature on all of Yamaha’s 4-stroke machines, dating back to the original RX-1 in 2003.
LCD gauge pod
The digital gauge pod on the RS Vector Mountain allows the driver to see key data at a glance. Either tachometer or speedometer readings can be displayed digitally, with the other appearing on the sweep gauge. The gauge also displays heater settings, fuel level, engine temperature and odometer. Yamaha offered the first digital gauge cluster in 2002 on the SX Viper. Since then, it has become a standard of the industry. The digital readout has been copied by the competition almost across the board.
